Day 25 - Konstanz, a Birthday, and a Farewell...

We'll miss you Grandpa and GrandJan!

Thursday was my dad and Jan's last day in Germany (they left Friday at 5:40 in the morning). Between Therese's skin breaking out terribly on Wednesday night, the suffocating heat, and my dad and Jan's need to pack, we decided to make it a shorter day by meeting at the train station in the afternoon before heading to Konstanz to see the sites and to eat a nice dinner to celebrate my dad's upcoming birthday. He'll be turning 29 I think...

In Konstanz we viewed the beautiful cathedral again, exploring more of the old parts of the church from the 900s. We then had drinks at a small brewery nearby called Brauhaus Joh. Albrecht. They brew their own beer but don't bottle it or sell it outside of the bar. The beer was really good. It had an unusual flavor but in a good way:-). Therese really liked the pretzels.

After our drinks we walked around a bit and ate at, get this all you theology buffs, the building where the Council of Constance and the following conclave were held (when they weren't in the cathedral). The restaurant was actually outside the building and had a magnificent view of the Bodensee. I had fresh fish from the Bodensee - yum. After dinner we hopped on the train for dessert Radolfzell - a much anticipated sundae from the little ice cream and drinks bar on the lake. As I have mentioned before, the Germans seem to really be in to their sweets. We have seen these gigantic sundaes all over the place and thought we would reserve our final night with my dad to indulge in one. The sundaes looked great but were so disappointing! The ice cream tasted like bland US ice cream and not the gelato we've become accustomed to. How sad! We should have gone back to Fernando's for the real thing... Oh well. After our disappointing dessert, we said a tearful (ok, I was the only one who was tearful...) goodbye. I still haven't heard from my dad (it's now Sunday) but I assume they made it ok and are eating some authentic gelato for me!

The Cathedral in Konstanz -you can tell the enormous height by looking at the people at the bottom

The Brauhaus

An interesting statue in the middle of a busy street in Konstanz...looks like some big old naked people sitting in and by a bath...
