Day 6 - Reichenau

Today (Saturday) we took a trip to Reichenau, a neighboring island. We woke up bright and early (thanks to Therese) and travelled by ferry. Reichenau is only accessible via one bridge or by boat. Reese was very excited about the idea of being on a boat and it was a really pleasant ride with great scenery. The sailboats were out in full-force today so we also got to weave left and right in our little ferry boat.

Reichenau was a beautiful island that houses/housed 3 monasteries by the 800s. We visited one that was founded in 725. I can hardly get my head around the thought of monks living in this place that long ago. We were able to visit the church at this monastery which was built in the year 1200. It was very tall and airy. There was a young man giving tours to children that involved taking them up on the altar and basically taking them through the motions of what a monk who served for Mass would do. They all were excited to ring the bells. It was adorable. We walked around the church (aka chased Therese around the church) and tried to understand what we were seeing, but the guide books were in German...

After the monastery we walked to the shore where we found a park. Therese fell in love with this yellow slide that had steps beside it. In talking about going on the slide today, she is just as excited talking about the steps as about the slide. Go figure.

We ate at a small place right near the park (and the water) and we had two German firsts: our first curry wurst (a great cut-up bratwurst with a sweet curry sauce- very popular here) and our first chicken in Germany (if you don't count Chicken McNuggets, which I don't). I've missed chicken a lot. We found some chicken breasts in the grocery store the other day - they cost 19 Dollars a pound...

After lunch we strolled around the island, ate our first German ice cream (there is ice cream EVERYWHERE here- it tasted like gelato), and played around the shore. All-in-all it was a pleasant day. To top it all off, Therese fell asleep sitting straight up in her stroller on the way home.

View of Singen from our ferry (you can kind of see the castle on top of the hill to the left)
